Our Story

Originally opened as a tea house at the turn of the last century, The Chanticleer has grown into one of Nantucket’s premier dining destinations.

Located in Sconset and surrounded by lush gardens that produce herbs, flowers, berries, and vegetables for the kitchen, it offers an elegant yet welcoming setting for intimate lunches, al fresco dinners, and special celebrations. Guests can dine in one of several thoughtfully designed rooms or under the warm island sky in the Rose Garden.

Susan Handy’s tenure at The Chanticleer is a story of preservation and evolution. Together with her partner, Chef Jeff Worster, she has spent nearly two decades stewarding one of Nantucket’s most storied dining landmarks.

Susan and Jeff took the helm of The Chanticleer in 2006, stepping into a legacy that dates back to the early 1900s. While the restaurant was originally a tea house and later a world-renowned French establishment, Susan’s arrival marked a new chapter. She has been credited with maintaining the romantic, "Old World" charm of the 'Sconset landmark while transitioning the service and atmosphere into a more approachable, yet still premier, fine-dining destination.

As The Chanticleer celebrated its 20th season in 2025, Executive Chef Andre Miller brought in a fresh culinary perspective grounded in sustainability, seasonality, and global technique. With over a decade of experience on the island—including seven years at Straight Wharf—Chef Miller carries forward The Chanticleer’s legacy of excellence while ushering in a vibrant new era. The restaurant also hosts weddings, rehearsal dinners, and other private events by reservation.

While the hands in the kitchen have changed, the spirit of The Chanticleer remains untouched. Whether you are lingering over an intimate lunch in the Rose Garden or joining family in the Grill Room, the partnership between Susan’s seasoned hospitality and Chef Miller’s culinary artistry ensures that every meal is an unforgettable Nantucket moment.
